Internet advertising: 38% higher spend in 2007
8 April 2008
£2.8 billion was spent last year on online adverts in the UK, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has said.
And, having grown in value by £2 billion in three years, online ads now represent 15.3% of the UK advertising market.
New IAB research, conducted with PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Advertising Research Centre, reveals that internet display advertising grew by 31% year-on-year, while search marketing grew in value by 39%, reaching a £1.6 billion total.
The IAB projects that the value of internet advertising will overtake that of TV adverts during 2009.
"2007 has been another success story for the internet," said Nicki Lynas, senior manager of entertainment and media practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers. "The strong growth in adspend reflects what has been an incredible year for internet advertising in the UK."
IAB chief executive Guy Phillipson added: "With [a] 16% share of media spend, the UK is head and shoulders above all other major world markets.
"It's clear [that] marketing directors now recognise the value of online to drive their business, and more and more are using rich media and video to build their brands," he added.
