Microsoft reveals new mobile internet browser
30 March 2007
Microsoft has announced details of Deepfish, a new mobile internet browser aimed at making it easier for consumers to navigate the web via their phones and mobile devices.
The browser relies on standard web pages rather than those specially designed for mobile internet. Instead navigation will be sped up via the ability to zoom in and out of pages.
Recent moves into the market by both Google and Yahoo! have seen the latter firm's OneSearch browser achieve considerable success among US consumers, but Microsoft believes its product will be able to usurp the offerings of both its rivals.
"Think about your mobile browsing experience today. It's often less than intuitive, the pages don't look like what you've come to expect on the desktop, and it takes a long time for a page to load. Deepfish aims to solve that problem," said Gary William Fluke, Microsoft Live Labs director.
Currently only one in ten US mobile users say they use mobile internet devices, but major media firms believe that this figure will skyrocket as browsers become more accessible and user-friendly.
