MySpace to ape Facebook application support
30 January 2008
Social network MySpace is to introduce a developer platform next month, in a bid to arrest the rate at which rival Facebook has been eroding its market lead.
The news, reported by Reuters, will see the network open itself to third-party developers from 5 February. Applications produced by Facebook users are widely seen as one of the reasons behind the newer site's rapid success.
"I will be focused on making a platform for developers to monetise and promote their applications," said MySpace's chief operating officer Amit Kapur.
Few details of the new platform are yet available, but anyone hoping to produce the next Scrabulous can register their interest at MySpace's developer site.
However, they should perhaps be aware that if sentiment on Facebook is to be believed, more pirate, vampire, werewolf or zombie applications won't be received warmly.
