Online video figures confirm YouTube reign
29 June 2007
YouTube has proved to be a resounding success for Google, despite having to deal with legal attacks over copyright issues.
New figures from online audience measurement firm Hitwise show that the site attracts more visits than all of its rivals combined.
The site, which was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion last November, has increased its site visits by 70 per cent since the start of the year and now boasts 60.02 per cent of market share of US visits to video sites.
Its closest rival, MySpace, gets just 16.08 per cent of site visits, while Google Video attracts 7.81 per cent, Yahoo! Video 2.77 per cent, and MSN just 2.09 per cent.
However, research indicates that sites could perhaps do more to increase their own search capabilities, as the majority of users access video sites via search engines rather than finding the clips on the sites themselves.
