UK internet users 'the most active in Europe'

The UK has the most active online population in Europe, according to the first comprehensive review of pan-European online activity from comScore.

The review, published on June 4th, found that the UK has the highest average number of daily internet users, with 21.8 million people accessing the internet every day.

In addition, the UK boasts the highest number of usage days per month (21 days per user), and the highest average time spent online per month (34.3 hours per user).

Across Europe as a whole, a typical consumer accesses the internet on 16.5 days each month and spends a total of 24 hours viewing 2,662 webpages, including both office and home usage.

Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe, commented: "This marks the first time we have released this detailed a portrait of internet usage across the 16 countries, making these comparisons truly revealing."

The review also revealed that the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries have the highest percentage of their populations using the internet, ranging from 68 per cent to 83 per cent, while the UK proportion stands at 62 per cent.

A recent study by Nielsen/NetRatings found that British women between the ages of 18 and 34 spend 27 per cent more time online than men in the same age group, although Office for National Statistics figures indicate that more men (64 per cent) use the internet on a daily basis than women (54 per cent).
