US/UK VoIP usage on the rise

30 March 2007

Over 10.6 million US households are now home to at least one user of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, it has been revealed – a rise of 1.6 million on figures from the third quarter of 2006.

The statistics, calculated by In-Stat as part of their market tracking service, show that use of internet-based phone services are continuing to flourish across the Atlantic, with 61 per cent of VoIP users saying they replaced a traditional phone line once they began using such internet technologies.

A main aspect of client-based VoIP appears to be the ability to make cheap international calls, In-Stat suggests, with 52 per cent of all such US VoIP calls following this trend.

Meanwhile, the take up of VoIP within the UK has led observers to suggest that there may be as many as three million users by the end of the year, with regulator Ofcom this week announcing the introduction of a new regulatory code for VoIP that will ensure consumers are not short-changed with regards to their choice of service.
