Video games, consoles and accessories 'hottest items'

6 December 2007

Online retail spending is being driven by video games, consoles and accessories, according to new figures from comScore.

The latest report from the analyst of the digital world discovered that this category of items rose by 145 per cent in November compared to the same period last year.

Growth was also registered in the furniture, appliances and equipment category - of 45 per cent - while sport and fitness saw sales rise by 30 per cent compared to November 2006.

Meanwhile, sales growth of 17 per cent has been witnessed by the toys, consumer electronics and books and magazines sectors, all of which comScore noted are traditionally popular at Christmas.

Between November 1st and December 2nd, more than $14 billion (£6.8 billion) was spent online - up 17 per cent from last year's corresponding period.

Chair Gian Fulgoni said the figures were "in line with the growth rates we've experienced for the season-to-date." The recently released comScore World Metrix audience measurement service found that visits to online retail websites in the UK grew by 11 per cent between October 2006 and October 2007.
