Web accessibility highlighted by expert

5 December 2007

It is important that websites are accessible to everyone, one sector expert has recently noted.

David Evans, government relations manager for the British Computer Society, said that accessibility is of profound importance if all sections of society are to benefit from technological advances.

Noting that older people often surf the web and the internet is popular with retirees, Mr Evans said that age is not a factor that often forms the basis for exclusion from internet life.

Instead, education, training and accessibility are important in order to expand the scope of the informational and communicational benefits offered by the internet.

"As public services are increasingly making good use of the internet, as well as commerce and the world of work, it is vital that people are not excluded as a consequence - it is important that the 'digital divide' does not lead to a disenfranchised segment of society," he remarked.

The British Computer Society was established in 1957 and has more than 60,000 members in over 100 countries.
