Wii 'most searched-for item'
7 December 2007
The Nintendo Wii has emerged top of the table in Hitwise's new ranking of the most searched-for products.
According to the figures for the two weeks ending December 1st 2007, the console achieved 0.19 per cent of traffic to shopping and classifieds websites, with the next most popular item being the Nintendo DS with a share of 0.07 per cent.
There were 13 times as many UK web searches for 'nintendo wii' than there were for 'apple ipod' and more than twice as many searched for Nintendo's newest console than for both 'ipod' and 'iphone', the traffic monitoring service found.
"Unfortunately for UK consumers, there is still a Wii shortage in the UK," explained Robin Goad on the Hitwise blog.
This has led to the emergence of a number of sites specifically dedicated to sourcing the product, with the most popular of these - Wii Consoles - increasing its market share by 265 per cent in November, making it the 58th most visited website in the shopping and classifieds category.
The Wii is the fifth games console released by Nintendo.
