Wikipedia to 'launch search engine'
9 March 2007
Online community encyclopaedia Wikipedia is planning to launch its own search engine in a bid to take five per cent of the market.
At a news conference in Japan, the company announced the plans for an interactive search engine.
Condemning the practice of secrecy in search ranking, the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, explained that an online community could develop the future of search engines.
Mr Wales said that the technology used by Google should not necessarily give it the market edge.
"The idea that Google has some edge because they've got super-duper rocket scientists may be a little antiquated now," Mr Wales said.
However, the collaborative nature of the Wikipedia site has made it an extensive and trusted resource.
He believes that a similar strategy could be extended to the search engine market, allowing users to tweak and build on work that had been submitted.
